How to Draw from Images

A graduate workshop at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Architecture, where students photograph scale models reconstructing rooms from interior photographs, instructed in 2017

How to Draw from Images explores how to produce a drawing from an image and how to pull clues from an image to piece together a larger whole. The project closely examines the photograph of a contemporary interior. Hints about what is behind and beyond the camera emerge through shadow and quiet details. Without prior knowledge of the buildings the photographs come from, students imagine the room portrayed as a drawing, digital model, paper model and a photograph once again. The final image reflects a series of translations from the subjective view of the lens.
