Double Vision

An essay for the Window Research Institute examining the ambiguity between windows and screens in art, architecture and technology, where the role of the frame disrupts spatial order, published in 2023

“Double Vision” is the second of a two-part publication for the Window Research Institute, a foundation based in Tokyo. As our communication becomes increasingly remote and our eyes affixed to screens, our interaction with windows and their views can seem surreal when the frame is virtually missing. In the built environment, windows can mirror this condition of viewing and misbehave as screens when their frames are manipulated and disrupt our perception of spatial order. As analog screens, these windows integrate the familiar ways we interpret information through screens and have the potential to quietly reactivate spaces.
